Preparing your boat engine for winter storage
The boating season is coming to an end and it’s time to prepare your diesel inboard engine for winter storage. Here are some important things to bear in mind:
- Cleaning: Start by cleaning the engine thoroughly. Remove dirt, salt and any other contaminants that may have accumulated during the season.
- Run a glycol mixture through the cooling system, then ensure that the mixture has passed through the entire system.
- Check that the seawater filter is free of snails, shells and seaweed.
- Oil change: Change the engine oil and oil filter. Use a high quality oil that is suitable for your engine. This reduces the risk of corrosion during the months when the engine is not in use.
- Replace the fuel filter.
- Check carefully for, and rectify, any oil or water leaks to safeguard next year’s operation.
- The fuel system: Drain or treat the fuel system with a stabiliser to prevent the fuel from deteriorating. This helps to keep the fuel system clean and prevent the clogging of fuel lines and fuel filters.
- Protect the engine: Spray some type of protective oil, such as WD-40, on all metal parts to protect against rust.
- Seal the engine intake: To prevent moisture and pests from entering the engine, you can cover the intake and other openings.
- Battery care: Disconnect and charge the battery properly. Store it in a dry, frost-free location. It’s a good idea to use a battery charger that keeps the battery at an even voltage.
By taking a little extra time to prepare your diesel inboard engine for the winter break, you will not only extend the service life of your engine, but also increase the chances of a trouble-free launch in the spring.
Good luck!
